This has to be one of the world’s most bizarre motorsport event! Firstly it’s set in the 120 degree heat of the Egyptian desert with the pyramids forming an impressive backdrop to some of the ‘special stages’. Secondly, the competitors use cars, bikes or microlight aircraft to complete the course. There’s even a class for 3-wheeled vehicles! Finally, the course itself is 3000 km long and covers some of the most daunting landscapes you can imagine. It’s a fascinating event beautifully and comprehensively filmed featuring superb action shots of competitors at speed (Jacky Ickx in a works Mercedes for example!) in the open desert on a tremendous range of machinery.
