This is the McLaren Senna and my secret is out of the bag - I'm getting one! The Senna is the newest member of McLaren's Ultimate Series of hypercars and is designed and built to be their most track focused car. Named after the great Ayrton Senna, it boasts some incredible performance numbers; with 800hp and 800nm from the 4.0l twin turbo V8, with a total weight of just 1,198kg thanks to extensive use of carbon fibre as found in the carbon Monocage III, entire body panels, and just about everything. Not only that, but it also offers 800kg of downforce thanks to a huge rear wing, active aero flaps in the front bumper, and aero elements over the entire surface and internals of the car. The result is not only a car that will do 0-100km/h in 2.8s, 0-200km/h in 6.8s and 0-300km/h in 16.8s and on to a top speed of 340km/h, but with such a focus on high downforce capabilities, it will also be one of the fastest cars ever around a race circuit. On the inside, the Senna features barely anything more than bare carbon and small Alcantara pads for the minimum in total weights. The seat shells total just 3.35kg, an infotainment display floats in the centre to provide controls. The Start button and door release switches are located in the roof panel to minimise the weight of cabling running to the doors. Built in Woking, England, the Senna pays tribute to the late Ayrton Senna. Upon arrival at Estoril, the very circuit where Ayrton achieved his first ever Grand Prix victory, it's immediately out on track for a first session and drive in the Senna. This is followed by more time to dissect and fully explore the car to take in all of the numbers and details, both around the exterior and also inside. A second outing on track really gives me an opportunity to come to grips and start to get a real feeling for what the Senna can do. There is no question the lap time performance on the road-legal Pirelli Trofeo R is similar to that of an FIA GT3 car.
